Counselling is a form of 'talking therapy' where I provide you with a warm, supportive and non-judgmental space so you can explore your thoughts and feelings, talk through your difficulties or mental health concerns, gain insights into your personality, relationships and your life - and develop strategies for positive change.
I use a range of approaches to do this, but in particular I am guided by an approach called "person centred" counselling. This puts you right at the heart of our sessions - no agendas, no pressure, no expectations, just a space for you to talk freely and openly.
My belief is that all of us have the power and capacity within us to make changes and unlock our true potential, but life, mental health and echoes from our past often stop us feeling that this is true. Person-centred counselling seeks to help you reconnect with your inner potential and your true self so you can reclaim the life you want.
I also use approaches such as attachment and transactional analysis to help you explore your relationships with yourself and others.
This type of counselling is generally open-ended and less directive/structured.
I am also qualified in using mindfulness to help you find space for quiet in your day.
CBT is a more structured, usually time-limited, type of therapy in which we work together specifically to explore the links between your thoughts, behaviours and feelings.
This starts from the assumption that our emotional responses and feelings are influenced by the thoughts we have about ourselves and the world, and the behaviours we learn throughout our lives.
If we can learn to 'catch', observe, challenge and change our thoughts and the behaviours that keep us stuck, we can start to change how we feel in response to the things that happen to, and around, us.
CBT therefore involves you and me working closely together to look at your 'automatic thoughts' and daily behaviours so we can introduce lasting changes. It's well-researched and known to be highly effective for a range of issues and mental health concerns including anxiety, OCD, panic attacks, phobias and much more.
